But what about Drum's Series 3 Land Rover?


From experience, quite a lot of Britpart stuff is OK really.
With their hydraulics, pull it apart and clean it thoroughly, even brand name stuff is not properly cleaned at the factories these days.

It's a 2A, no plastic dash here.

I went for Bearmach which is probably not much better than britpart.

Decided to go with the clutch master cylinder with its own reservoir, instead of sharing the 'bean can' with the brakes.


The clutch slave cylinder is shafted too. That's meant to be the bleed nipple where that mangled nut is.

I have fitted a new lift pump which is pressurising the system nicely and allowed me to fill the filter but I'm having issues bleeding the distributor pump. One bleed nipple is spraying fuel everywhere while the other is dry as a bone.

As you can see I like to start new jobs before finishing others.
The new wiring loom is half done, the clutch is half done and I've half fixed the fuel system. I'll half do the brakes next.

It wasn't until the last of the series 3s, early 80s, that LR fitted a reversing light. A plastic reverse light on one side and matching fog light on the other.

What I didn't know until this week was that reversing lights were available much earlier as optional equipment. Pic stolen from the series 2 club

Turns out I have a pair* of these in a box of bits.


Almost a pair, one is a Wipac the other Unipart.

Same difference. Loads of BL cars had those Wipac efforts. Optional on the 1100/1300. Standard I think on the All-aggro, either side of the number plate.

We have a golf. One of four cars I bought in a bidding frenzy one night at Morris Leslie auction three years ago. It has been the wife's car and she put 60000 miles on it until being replaced by an Alfa Mito a couple of months ago.

I'm not sure whether to keep it or use it, but its mot expired and things needed to be fixed. I wrote before about the abs sensor that I wrestled with and replaced only for the abs light to remain lit.

Other problems included a leaking diesel cooler and a clonking drop link. At the weekend, I deleted the cooler and replaced the drop link, leaving the abs issue to deal with tonight. If it wasn't the sensor, it must be the ring on the bearing.

I needed an M18 spline bit and some leverage.


Shiny new bearing and stretch bolt torqued up to tight as fuck plus half a turn.


Relief as the abs light stays out on the test drive.


Should have a fresh mot tomorrow.

That pic reminds how fucking awful VW dashes are at night. I hate the blue & red, it's way too harsh compared to a nice soft green light with white numbers which a dash should have.

Worst thing about that pic is the 5.5C. Fuck that, yet.

I just threw away a perfectly good Mark 5 Golf rear hub. I bought the special spline drives for the job, doubt I'll ever use them again.
