Yeah, to stop the parking pawl being snapped/bent if someone bumps into the car rather hard.

The more rural areas of Wirral still have the occasional old style road signs.

Well it can be stolen by an opportunist, as many are in winter when owners are "warming them up". Insurers will be laughing too.
