I do not care for the modern Rolls-Royce either but at least BMW is keeping the tradition alive with the craftsmanship that goes into them. And I agree about the depreciation curve, those Wagentleys are going to be the new M Class/Cayenne.

Controversial opinion.

They are all "wankpanzers" or whatever derogatory term you want to use. I'm including modern, old and much older in this.

Whether a RR Silver Shadow or a Silver Cloud, they're all extremely expensive vehicles when they were new and many still are. They're ostentatious vehicles for the wealthy to show off their status and cash. Nothing subtle about any of them. Whatever is big and brash for their era.

They look classy as they get older when they mellow off with rose tinted glasses.

The British class system at work.

Modern Bentley's are shite. They went down the pan when the company was split. Older RR and Bentley are more than just the status symbol people think they are. They were very well made. There aren't many 50 year old cars that you can be pretty sure every bolt will come undone. Until you work on one or spend a bit of time checking out the engineering you won't be able to appreciate how good they were. Shadows were great cars but pressed steel were as bad as BL during the 70's which gave them a bad name.

I must admit to having had very little to do with the cars but have always admired the proper ones. The number of Mk6/R Type Bentleys running about in the early 1970s is quite difficult for people to realise nowadays - usually scruffy, often rusting but just capable of carrying on and on. The same, I am sure, went for earlier decades when Twenty Ghosts were still in regular use and often by their original owners. Bearing in mind, too, that filling the thing up twice often approached the market value for the whole car in those pre-"Classic Car" days.

Wankpanzer doesn't apply to saloon cars. It's those SUVs.
