And probably a lot cheaper to run overall as your electric whizzer will probably be written off within 10 years as the new batteries it needs are either unavailable, due to changing technology, or too expensive.
Unlike the rust buckets of the 70s and 80s with the dissolving bodywork we could fix with P38 and fibreglass I don't see such a back street solution for aging battery cars with dodgy batteries.

I do.

People for years have already been pulling apart Prius battery packs and replacing dead cells. By far easy enough to do DIY.

Most likely what will happen is that there will be rebuild specialists pop up that can deal with the packs. So when your pack gets to the point where a number of cells die, you have your mechanic remove it and send it off to a local place. Like you used to get with starter/alternator/engine rebuilds - still happens of course but no where near as frequent.

Packs that have significantly reduced storage capacity but generally work fine are prime candidates for renewable energy storage to buffer grid demands. Too heavy to be efficient for transportation but ideal for stationary applications where bulk vs capacity is less of an issue.

Fair enough. Given what I perceive as a significant increase in the technology involved in batteries, moving towards solid state I believe, then I still think there may not be the critical mass for specialists to be profitable.
There is the additional issue regarding the electronics; if a MOT testable system fails can it be fixed and correctly calibrated? It's already difficult to get some electronic parts for 80s stuff. Even stuff a lot newer has problems. We had a hell of a job just to get a ECU for my eldests 2003 C3 about 4 years ago.

The vendor appears to be a bit of an 'end (it's not a 518i FFS) but.......
