That's fucking horrible. Lincoln started making nice cars again in 1961 with the clap door Connie.

A 1963 Continental sedan is just perfect.

The '61 is actually the best of the bunch.
It's a darn good car, irrespectively of being yank.

Question: After the '58-'60 Lincolns, which were the largest monocoque cars ever built, who framed the '61 and why?

I think possibly the PT Cruiser wins the biggest monocock award?

Biggest monocoque - Daimler DS420? Elwood Engel framed the Continental around a proposed Thunderbird replacement.

Engel styled it. The two Harolds, Johnson and MacDonald, framed it. It was for noise reduction purposes. The '61 Lincolns and T'birds are the first mass produced cars where sound cancellation instead of mere deadening was an engineering parameter. This wasn't technically possible with monocoques at the time (that was pioneered by the '95 Oldsmobile Aurora). The 58-60 Lincolns are bigger than a DS 420, i.e. have a larger footprint. They turned out to be too big even for American luxury car buyers, hence the 61s were also severely downsized. They are 15 inches shorter overall riding an 8 inch shorter wheelbase, but are heavier than their Cadillac and Imperial counterparts nonetheless. In fact, they are about the same length as the '77-'90 Caprices.

Yet the 61 on Continentals were still outsold by Cadillac. The Lincoln was a higher quality item though.

The 61 Lincoln started life as a Thunderbird replacement. It's a masterpiece of subtle styling and fine proportions - it made the Mark X Jag look like a pig. Lincoln could not leave alone, and ruined it in 1964 by making the roof taller and wider. I'd have a 1966/7 two door Coupe through- if there wasn't a Toronado or Eldorado around.

Nice winter barge.

Shame about the asylum-vinyl furniture.

Cannock.

Ugly, and too close to what a tidy mid 60's Mustang costs:
