If you're honing the bores then stick new rings in. I can't believe they'd cost much.

Re: Rusty Triumphs in Scotland
They are cheap but my concern is that new rings will be mullered by the lip at the top, the old ones are worn in with it so to speak.

That's what stepped top rings are for

^^ That and/or the lip is the bit of bore the rings don't reach anyway.

Re: Rusty Triumphs in Scotland
I used Cords stepped rings when I rebuilt my 803cc A Series. Also sometimes known as ridge-dodgers. It was a successful engine and didn't use any oil or smoke. But I had the block inspected by the machine shop of course, in order to check the bores first. They were within tolerances so honed them, then I could fit the rings to the old pistons.

New rings on old pistons; the trouble is, they can have too much up and down play in the ring lands and the rings become an oil pump. Especially a prehistoric long stroke thing like that.

Re: Rusty Triumphs in Scotland
The old rings would be much more prone to that.
Generally I'm not convinced the Scottish way of engine rebuilds has any benefits at all and look forward to have this explained. Why would one open up an engine and then not take the opportunity to do it right?

Neither am I. That's why I leave engines together for now.

But you are Mr Moneybags in comparison. Cpt 70s can't afford a pot to piss in. He's broker than his engines. He doesn't even spunk his money away on ciggies or vape juice.
