Thanks. That's appreciated. As I said before my Ideal option would be shoving any old engine which runs in it for a temporary measure while rebuilding the original lump. I do tend to use the trike quite frequently.

Now I can begin stripping. Then after that maybe I'll start on the engine work

Why does that look like a Jag X308 on my phone?

It's missing a lot of bodywork! On that photo too I've noticed my driveway is a decent size too. Never realised it was that wide till I had a 10ft wide gazebo and enough room to fit a car at the side and two more in front.

Cause it's a four eyed twat driven by an Al Murray look-a-like?

Good news. Looking at figures there's no need to strip it down. Just use and moniter. Compression figures are 155-160 psi over all pots. No sign of mixage.

What about the knocking smoking and overheating?

Knocking wasn't bottom end. Think the block had just got too hot and oil thinned out. Our self employed internet god has been over today and we've gone through it. Found the rad fan was next to useless,a bit too much deflection on the belt for water pump too. The engine itself has alot of dried old oil in places so maybe it was too hot and smoking from that? Will be replacing the rad, pump, fan and full service with coolant flush before it does anything else then go from there. Will still keep an eye out for another lump though and restore it for a bench tested spare.

Indeed, the broken header tank reducing coolant capacity won't have helped either. It'll be interesting to see the state of the waterpump when it comes out to have the stripped threads for the fan bolts sorted. I wonder if it's old & corroded so it's not pumping as much flow as it should, hence allowing hot spots that overheat around the engine.

It had about 1/4" of mayo inside the rocker cover, which got cleaned out when I reset the tappets. Two inlets where a bit tight, the rest where fine. I guess it's possible it's got OMGHGF between oil & water without touching the combustion chambers, but that'd be a pretty rare style of failure I'd have thought?

It's got a ticky/knock but it's more camshaft height in the block than crank & much to 'light' for anything important, it also seems to go away with revs so I suspect a dry/worn/covered in emulsified oil tappet rather than anything serious.

Bub's mate who knows these things suggested running a none pressurised expansion tank to increase cooling capacity. I am thinking right that you keep the pressure cap on the rad & just poke the overflow into a bottle to do this? With the bottle level or lower than the rad of course.
