A lot of the things he mentions are 100% congruent with my experiences. Before you even get around to fix anything, or into the actual restoration process, you are undoing the bodges and ill repairs previous owners did, often damaging more than mending things in the process.
This is rarely motivated by fraudulent intent, although that happens too, but often by ignorance, incompetence, laziness, impatience and cheapness.
Since I'm no longer doing yanks, I can assure you that all this is not restricted to Americans. Oh no. Not at all. Not by any stretch of the imagination.
