Weird new car warranty exclusions

Post by LynehamHerc »

Something just reminded me of my 2007 Galaxy that got written off.

Basically water was getting in through the roof , probably on both sides, resulting in a in-car paddling pool for the middle row passengers and a potential bill of at least £4,500 for new airbags, partial loom etc..plus labour.

The weird bit to me is that the guy at the Ford dealer, who recovered it when it wouldn't start, told me that Ford would only cover that sort of damage for 12 months from new due to muppets overloading roofracks and pulling the seams apart.

There were no warning lights etc. and no sign of anything wrong apart from a tendency to mist up at times which I put down to windows being left slightly open by the family. The carpets weren't 'squelchy' as they sort of sat above the floorpan.

Explain "new car" and "warranty".

I thought twice about posting it on here but decided to do so as I assume some will run newish cars and it also seems weird to me.
(My own cars are now 1968 and 1974 as I didn't replace the Galaxy which was basically used as a university shuttle bus for my sons)

It was a small print jungle when I bought my last new car in 1990 and I guess it has ventured to become a legal minefield since.

Lifetime guarantee has changed too. Your bike broke but it came with a lifetime guarantee? Tough shit mate, it just reached the end of its lifetime and your warranty just expired

On a different tangent, Waterman made a Hundred Year Pen announced with a fanfare of publicity, of which I have an example, guaranteed for a century. However it was only the nib covered by the guarantee, not the lucite pen barrel which are prone to crumble away over time.

Hyundai has reduced my warranty down to three years/100,000 miles from five years unlimited mileage because it's a taxi/licenced vehicle. They just see whether the car has been MOT'd from new and that sort of gives the game away.

I've had the car 8 months and I'm already getting warranty anxiety having used up 37% of the manufacturers aftercare.

How's that legal when your contract says different?

Changing, or amending a contract is not illegal.
