I robbed a BMW M40 camshaft and rockers from a breakers that were from the 'you know how much they are new, mate?' school.

The bits were perfect and clearly recent new replacements so I tie wrapped the cam to my shin and had four rockers in each sock. I bought a ten quid door mirror - with a straight face.

I think you've told that story before. Cracking though.

Has anyone here ever managed to buy a whole car from a scrapyard? remember trying to buy a tidy 1974 Opel Manta back in 1991 that someone had scrapped only to be told that once ia car is through the gates then they're impossible to sell on.

I got a body shell once and the V5 for it's scrapped reg, so paperwork wise they could sell them on in the 90s.

In 1990 I purchased a VW1600E. I only wanted it for its completely unmarked floorplan and running gear which found its way into a much earlier Notch. Did not keep the fuel injection, however.

Somebody bought the un-MOT-able MG Farina that I had weighed in. Saw it on the road with a new tax disc just a few days later!

My mate bought a sunbeam imp from a breakers in Orpington. He was going to swap the better running gear onto his normal imp, but the sunbeam imp was in better condition than his original one.
I last saw it under a tarp in his mum and dad's back garden around 1989.

My Cowley came straight from the yard although they call themselves "Salvage" rather than "Breakers". Wouldn't sell me any of the Farinas or the Herald he had in there though....I suspect the Farinas (and maybe the Cowley if I hadn't stepped in) were bespoken to a racer but he used a different terminology for the Triumph - something to do with the insurance company as it had been nicked.

I even asked if I could unbolt the car and buy it like Johnny Cash but he said I'd never be able to register it and I won't ring anything....

Had more than one complete running and driving car free from the yard at times when scrap price was on its arse and the place was filling up quicker than they could clear it. One time the car hadn’t even been taken off the truck.
