Due to the three amigos appearing more often I finally booked this in to get it looked at, but the local garage has no space till the 17th.

As it was meant to be dry today I decided to have a quick look for anything obvious, obviously it started raining halfway through & I didn't bother to take any pics. On these the ABS sensor is identical for every wheel & has a fly lead that clips on to it & then back to the loom, an improvement on the XJ40 I had where the leads were part of the sensor. Anyway, both back wheels had moisture & dirt in the connectors where they connect to the sensor so they got washed out with WD40 and put back. The front's seemed ok connection wise but where the NSF wheel fly lead runs up the suspension arm it was cable tied wrong so it was pulling tight as the suspension drooped. I've fixed that but if it's damaged the wiring it won't solve it obviously.

I could/should have disconnected the other end of the fly leads to check if connectivity was there when I wigged them but as you've got to take the carpets etc out the back because they connect inside the car & crawl under the front as they connect on the inner wing I didn't bother. I'd got wet enough already...

Time will tell if it's helped.

You know that the 3 amigo's on a discovery is the sensor inside the abs block and a fairly easy fix. Most garages will say it needs a new abs unit at so many thousands of pounds

Aye so I've heard.

This is intermittent with nothing particularly seeming to trigger it, although it's come up a few times when going to max lock when parking. That makes me think front end wiring, but most times it's shows a fault is when I start the car or when pulling away which seems sensor like to me too.

I popped out this afternoon to collect my leathers from repair & everything worked, strangely it seemed smoother as the traction control cut in & out. So I'm hoping the moisture & bit of dirt in one rear connector could have been it.

I'll type this quietly but I think this is fixed, it's not given an issue since drying those connections out & the amount it was playing up before it would have done several times by now.

If only all fixes were as cheap.

UPDATE!

As per other posts, I finally put a new battery in this during the week. Had to recode the fob to the car and it took three run cycles for it to admit the ABS etc works, but that's no surprise after so long with no volts in it

I taxed this today and took it out for a run. First impressions were 'fuck, £50 is under half a tank now!'. It took 15-20 miles to drive right as the brakes cleaned up and tyres turned round again. The steering issue has fixed itself though, which is a result.

So now I need to do oil n filter on it before it gets too cold, get the exhaust sorted and try not to use it too much due to fuel costs.

Exhaust wise, I've been recommended a stainless place locally that a few people I know have used for much more expensive cars. I can't remember the name though, so I'll need to ask them again.

This is most unexpected.
Well done!

No, because the engine is at the correct end.

The Series III XJ6 and the XJS both have a reputation for being "easily combustible.

I know that yours isn't a Series 3, which is a far superior car, but it shares the same engine layout.
