Well I've finally cleaned up the front brakes today, after saying I'd do it since I've got the car. The sliding pins where damn cruddy so I'm sure it's helped, I'd have done the rears too but it keeps raining.

I also found why the passenger footwell gets damp in the rain, that'd be the hole in the floor... The inner arch has been plated before, but the rust obviously wasn't treated properly as it's just extended down past the plate. It'll need doing properly one day but for now it's had a bath in kurust & some filler to waterproof it. It'll get undersealed tomorrow if it's dry outside.

Oddly enough this is the exact same repair I did on the blue Sovereign i had previously. My old XJ40 was rotten in pretty much the same place too, so it's not rot it's Heritage.

That mess is now undersealed. Rear brakes rebuild & I've found another hole in the floor where a bung has moved & allowed it's hole to rot. I've ignored it for now as I've run out of rust convertor.

I really do need to spend some time laid under this with a wire brush, rust convertor & then coat the whole damn thing in fresh underseal. Nothing bad there yet, but you can see where it'll go if not sorted within a year or so.

I know this is a radical idea but why not actually weld it? A nice welded repair done properly now would see her right for years to come whereas a fibreglass and filler job will probably not.

I know, mind my own business, wind it in fat boy, etc but I have spent hours doing a bodge with filler and mastic when doing the same job but with actual metal and welding wire has taken a lot less time.

Actual welding requires talent or money. I have neither currently so I'm bodging it to keep it watertight until I do.

If I can weld, anybody can! Believe it or not, I can weld with a MIG, or gas and even stick if pushed. It's actually quite easy, just getting your bollocks warmed up enough to have a crack at it is the hard part.

I can sort of do stick, I've never got the hang of Mig though.

Not really old chap, I just like 'posh' toys. The one time I put lots of money into anything was the cottage an ex kept as it was 'all hers'. So I had to start again using credit cards to fake savings for a mortgage deposit.
